Red/Orange Line
R4 Kaohsiung International Airport

(I) Natural lighting and integration of the station with surroundings

  1. In the spatial design, the architect confidently sets up a large skylight above the concourse level, extending downward to the ground, and adopts a high ceiling design in the hall that has the functions of skylighting and discharge of smoke. The skylight panels produce an urban landscape and nightscape lighting effect in the surroundings.
  2. The skylight panels are made of dual-layer hollow heat-proof tempered glass. Automatically operated sunshade curtains are set up to reduce conduction of thermal radiation.

(II) Integration of the public arts in the space of the station

  1. A large glass wall named “Emerald Laminata” for public arts is designed in the hall on the concourse level. This is a masterpiece that Lutze, an artist of German origin, created for the R4 Kaohsiung International Airport and the largest glass sculpture in the world.
  2. Master Lutz creates this public art by manipulating the interactive physical characteristics of the light and water waves and controlling the properties of the glass materials. He made a 3D model with traditional pottery, cut the polished glass into pieces manually, transported them to Kaohsiung City, and reassembled them there. The art delicately expresses the variation of the light wave and waterflow. It looks like a pool of water that turns over and over in the nature with unmatchable greatness.
  3. The interior spatial design combines the decoration, lighting, environmental control equipment and public art as a whole, and merges the artistic atmosphere into the space of the building. It provides a quiet, comfortable and pleasing public space for the passengers moving between the MRT station and the airport.

(III) Stylish Design of the Entrances

  1. In consideration of the reconstruction plan for Kaohsiung Park, the A1 entrance is located at a corner in the park. To form a vista for the city, the entrance is designed with flower stands and pergolas to give the park more green and enhance the identity of the entrance.
  2. The A2 and C1 entrances near the terminal building are located under an elevated road and thus is restricted on height. Silver-white metal sheets in conjunction with silver-gray and silver-white face bricks are used to align with the overall conditions of the terminal and enhance the identity of the entrances.
  3. The A4, A5, B and C2 entrances in the parking area are built with the roof panels tilting at an elevation of 10 degrees, expressing an image of take-off and speed. Glass is used for the facade to express an image of light weight and transparency.

(IV) Urban Night Lighting Design

  1. Lighting devices in the form of light boxes are set up above elevators. They produce a lighting effect like a “radiating box” in the night and give more fun.
  2. Spotlights are set up as auxiliary lighting devices in the landscape area.

(V) Healthy and Safe Environment

  1. A healthy and safe environment as well as accessible spaces and facilities are provided for the disadvantaged minorities or the people with difficulties in movement or with disabilities or impaired vision.
  2. Explicit signage systems in the form of light boxes and LED marquees are set up to provide updated information.
  3. Surveillance equipment is set up along the underground passage of the station. It is connected to the security and control center to ensure surveillance without dead zones.
  4. A bright and comfortable environment is provided with comfortable air conditioning and lighting facilities.
