Red/Orange Line
R23 Ciaotou Station

(I) Sucrose crystals provide the ideas of design for the overall style of the station and are integrated with the cultural characteristics of the sugar industry in Ciaotou.

(II) The 3D section shows a symmetrical hexagonal design with a large opening on the side to allow exchange of air and natural lighting. A bright and relaxing urban skywalk is designed inside the station. In addition to providing a passage for the passengers to take MRT trains or transfer to Taiwan Railway transportation, the skywalk serves as a space for pedestrians to walk through between the old and new downtown. The flooring is constructed with a parquetry design of natural quarry tiles to manifest the image of the chemical bonds in the sucrose crystals.

(III) The main structure of the top cover is supported with round steel pipe trusses to show the arrangement of the sucrose crystals. The linear structural members are highlighted under lighting to manifest the features of the station in the night against the urban environment. Skylights are set up above the main vertical route on the platform level to enhance the directionality and identity of the route. Master Pang-Hsiung Chu from Meinung Yao Studio created a public art named “Invention,” of 12 x 9m in the form of a ceramic wall, indicating the sugar industry as the origin of all the industries in Taiwan.
