This year marks the first consecutive Spring Festival holiday since Kaohsiung’s South Circular Light Rail Line (SCLRL) started operating. From the first day to the fourth day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, SCLRL passenger traffic volume was significant. It is estimated that an average of approximately 48,000 passengers a day used the SCLRL during this period, with the highest number of average passengers seen on the third day of the Spring Festival at 55,000. Compared to an average of approximately 23,000 daily passengers last year, ridership of the SCLRL has increased by 106%. Furthermore, the average ridership of the MRT for the four days of the Spring Festival reached approximately 194,000 users this year, up to 228,000 on the third day. The overall daily ridership of the MRT and LRT was 242,000, an increase of 11% compared to last year. These numbers represent new records since COVID-19 broke out. It is clear that people are gradually regaining confidence in taking mass transit.

With the opening of the SCLRL, the number of stations served has expanded from 14 to 23, and the route has been extended from 8.7 km to 12.8 km. Furthermore, ride services were provided free of charge until February 28, as well as marketing was done for Kaohsiung 100 and the Kaohsiung Light Rail Girls. The KCLR has become the best means of mass transport for returning residents and tourists to celebrate the New Year around Asia's New Bay Area. It also effectively eased traffic on Wufu Road, which has typically been used to enter the Pier 2 District, and extended its operation until 12:00 a.m. to make it easier for passengers to travel at night. The most crowded places during the holidays are the three consecutive stations in the Pier 2 District (C11 Love Pier, C12 Dayi Pier-2, and C13 Penglai Pier-2), followed by C5-Dream Mall, C14 Hamasen, and two new main stations, C32 Kaisyuan Park and C17 Gushan District Office. The stations that saw the highest number of daily passengers are O1 Sizihwan (13,000), O2 Yanchengpu (15,000), R14 Kaohsiung Arena (18,000), and R16 Zuoying (25,000). In addition, the projection mapping artwork of Rise of Phoenix in O5/R10 Formosa Boulevard and R9 Central Park also attracted a significant number of tourists.

The KRTC also collected valuable feedback on the LRT from the public during the super long weekend. Most of their suggestions recommended that the route be extended, the waiting time reduced, and the speed improved. The KRTC will optimize its operation and provide all these propositions to the government for reference.

At the end of the Lunar New Year, the KRTC thanked the city government for its efforts in stabilizing the epidemic situation so that the public can regain confidence in taking the LRT and MRT. Furthermore, it facilitated a large number of tourists in visiting Kaohsiung’s popular attractions without traffic congestion while celebrating the Spring Festival.
