Following the completion of the Kaohsiung Circular Light Rail (Kaohsiung LRT) loop line, the transit network has expanded significantly, offering enhanced convenience for residents. The LRT rail now serves eight high schools and vocational high schools, including Dah Yung Senior High School, Kaohsiung Industrial High School, St. Dominic Catholic High School, Shu-Te Home-Economics & Commercial High School, National Kaohsiung Normal University Affiliated Senior High School, San Sin High School of Commerce and Home Economics, Chung-Hwa School of Arts, and Rueisiang High School. The line also features seamless connections to the Kaohsiung Metro (R6, R13, O1) and Taiwan Railways (C18, C20, C30) at three key transfer stations, making it a crucial public transport service for students. In just six months, ridership numbers at these eight stations increased by 1,995, marking a significant 35% increase. During peak school commute hours, the city government has introduced additional light rail services to better manage the flow of students. Security personnel and school traffic guides are stationed at key stations to ensure safe and orderly student movement in and out of the stations.
The Transportation Bureau announced that with the start of the new school year in September, the Route 168 bus has been redesigned as a community shuttle service, integrating seamlessly with the MRT and LRT systems. The route now includes stops at key schools such as Kaohsiung Industrial High School, Shu-Te Home-Economics & Commercial High School, St. Dominic Catholic High School, National Kaohsiung Normal University Affiliated Senior High School. It also connects to major transit points like Hanshin Arena MRT Station, Aozihdi MRT Station (Heart of Love River LRT Station), Cultural Center MRT Station, Yanchengpu MRT Station, Department of Health LRT Station, TRA Science and Technology Museum Station, and TRA Sankuaicuo Station, meeting the transfer needs of students along the route. Despite the adjustments, the service level of Route 168 remains unchanged, with travel times reduced by approximately 15-20 minutes and the route further optimized.
According to statistics from the Mass Rapid Transit Bureau, eight Kaohsiung LRT stations (C1, C20, C21, C28, C29, C31, C33, C34) are located near high schools and vocational high schools, making them the most convenient stops for students commuting to and from school. In early March 2024, the average daily ridership at these stations was 5,738. By the beginning of September 2024, following the new school term, the average daily ridership had increased to 7,733. This represents a significant increase of 1,995 passengers, a 35% growth within just six months, with Shu-Te Home Economics & Commercial High School Station and Kaohsiung Industrial High School Station showing the most marked growth. This data highlights that student commutes have become a critical component of the light rail’s weekday ridership. Since the completion of the circular light rail loop, the synergy between the LRT, MRT, and Taiwan Railways has begun to manifest, making transfers more efficient for daily travelers. Many students have started switching to the LRT for their commutes using the government's TPASS monthly commuter pass, aligning with Kaohsiung's initiative to transform into a low-carbon city. Encouraging students to use LRT and MRT not only ensures safe and orderly travel but also promotes energy conservation and reduces carbon emissions, demonstrating the city's commitment to sustainable public transportation.
