The total combined length of the Red and Orange Lines of the Kaohsiung Rapid Transit System will be 42.7 kilometers. Along these two lines, there will be 38 stations, of which 28 will be underground, two at ground level and eight elevated.

Running south to north, the Red Line will start at the intersection of Yanhai and Hanmin Roads in Hsiaokang District, and follow Jungshan and Boai Roads through Kaohsiung City before ending in Chiaotou, Kaohsiung County. The total length of the Red Line is approximately 28 kilometers with 24 stations, of which 15 will be underground, 8 elevated, and one at ground level. There will also be two depots to serve the line.

Running west to east, the Orange Line will start at Hsitzuwan and then follow Jungjeng Road out to Fengshan City and on to Taliao, Kaohsiung County. The total length of this line is about 14.4 kilometers with 14 stations. All the stations will be underground except for the ground level Taliao Station. A single depot will be built to serve the line.

The Red and Orange Lines of Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit Project have been divided into 11 Sections and 3 Depots general contracts. For the certainty of construction time is required, the scope of each general contract includes Civil Works, Building Service, Environmental Control and Public Art, etc. Refer to the "Rapid Transit Construction Specification" (published by Construction Specification Integration Center of Public Construction Commission) and "Conditions of Contract for EPC/Turnkey Projects" (published by International Federation of Consulting Engineers FIDIC), the conditions of contract require contractor to undertake the responsibility of design, procurement and construction.
